Royal Fans of Club Sandwich:

The name Club Sandwich has gained lot of popularity and it is assumed that it shall contain Chicken Breast fried or roasted along with bacon dressed with thin tomato slices with their dripping juice and crispy lettuce kept in two or 3 slices laced with mayonnaise. It received Royal recognition also reflected by the historical fact that Club Sandwich became favorite snack of King Edward VIII of England and his wife.

There are different views how and when the Club Sandwich originated. It received wide publicity after the year 1903

Undated Story of Past:

It seems all good things are developed out of necessity or an accidental happening. Story goes like this a person arrived late home, when all the servants had gone for sleep. The person was feeling very hungry went to the kitchen and searched the ice chest, if there was some thing available to eat.

To his surprise it had many remnants in small quantities, but was nothing was of adequate quantity to satisfy his great hunger. He took some toasts and butter, yet required to take along with buttered toasts. He got his hand on mayonnaise small quantity each of bacon and chicken besides a tomato. He has thankful for all these. Applied mayonnaise to buttered toasts, put chicken & bacon pieces over it along with sliced tomato and kept the other toast over it. He relished very much his discovery dish and his hunger was also satisfied and he felt most happy.

Next day he related the incidence to his friends and relation about his wonderful experience the night before. This gave the birth to genuine sandwich, which was adopted and refined at commercial places like resorts and hotels. Sandwich soon spread all over as a convenience snack with many versions with Chinese stuff, marine stuff, exclusively vegetarian stuff and each was named according to the stuff used in the sandwich.

The Documented Evidence:

Another view is that sandwich appearance started in 1894 from Saratoga Club House located at Saratoga Club House situated at Saratoga Springs in New York a place known for gambling place only for men incidentally this place is also associated with the origin of potato chips.

The Sandwich originated from the kitchens of Tourist Resorts and Hotels. Soon the club sandwiches found its entry as flight snacks due to its easy digestibility and the exceptional nutritional value. Soon it spread world over as light food stuff through passengers traveling in the international flights. Seeing the demand all local hotels started serving club sandwiches to hotel guests, who wanted a quick light nutritious snack instead of regular meals.

Old Testimony of Club Sandwich:

The oldest recipe recorded pertaining to Club sandwich dates back to 1903 period a little more than a century the description reads as under:

Club Sandwich - Roast a slice of bread evenly on low heat and apply butter thinly. On one bread roast heated keep first, a slim slice of bacon which is boiled and dried to achieve tenderness, over the bacon keep slice of white mutton of turkey or chicken. Over it place slice of a ripe tomato dress with tender leaves of lettuce. Put over sufficient mayonnaise. Finally put the second piece of toast over it. This makes delicacy called Club Sandwich. It is highly nutritious and a perfect meal.

Participation of Club sandwich at Food Fairs:

In the subsequent year the World Fair 1904 held in St. Louis Club Sandwich was displayed and served in the restaurants functioning in the fair with its four different varieties with modification of the stuffing materials used.

Subsequently food fairs held in many countries made available Club sandwich on their menus for the visitors to feel its taste. The club sandwich was accepted by the public as a convenient and light good dish for a change. Now all small and big hotels, bakery shops have their varieties of sandwiches in jumbo sizes.
